Criteria for selection
Willingness certificates/application of Medical/Surgical Specialists of Army are invited by GHQ Med Dte. Selected candidates are posted to AFIC/NIHD for completion of req trg.
Eligibility for entering FCPS Part-II Training program of Armed Forces candidates
(1) Qualification: FCPS, FRCS, MRCP or equivalent.
(2) Three research papers written by the candidates must have been published in indexed listed Medical Journals.
Final selection will be made by a board comprising the following under the Chairmanship of Surgeons General/DGMS (IS) at General Headquarters (Medical Directorate)

Upto four candidates each will be taken per year for training in Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and two per year in Anesthesia and Paediatric Cardiology.The general goal of the residency programs at AFIC/NIHD is to facilitate acquisition of basic clinical competence and specific experience related to a specialty. The residents undergo a structured training program and are given graded responsibilities with periodic evaluation of their performance and regular feedback. The residents are also prepared for postgraduate examinations and are expected to acquire their postgraduate qualifications along with their training.
Candidates shall follow the training program/syllabi by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan.
Books and Medical Journals will be available for use by the candidates undergoing Trg in AFIC/NIHD Rawalpindi.

The residents are also prepared for postgraduate examinations and are expected to acquire their postgraduate qualifications along with their training.
After completion of the training, it is hoped that some will become specialists in areas where expertise is much needed in Pakistan, and others will become academicians in the teaching institutions of the country.
A minimum requirement to apply for the residency programs is MBBS or equivalent qualification registered with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), one year house job or internship experience of six months each in Medicine and Allied and Surgery and Allied specialties. The other requirements specific to each specialty are later. Applications must be addressed to the Personnel Department, who in turn will forward it to appropriate departments.
All current Postgraduate Clinical Training Programs of the AFIC/NIHD(except Emergency Medicine) are recognized for FCPS Examination by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan.
A resident's appointment contract is for a period of one year. Contract renewal is dependent upon promotion to the next residency year, which in turn depends on evaluation of performance by the faculty.
