Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology and National Institute of Heart Diseases (AFIC/NIHD)

     This 270-bedded hospital is a major secondary and tertiary cardio thoracic center in Pakistan, dedicated to the cardiac patients from all over the country including Armed Forces, Federal Govt. employees and civil population. AFIC/NIHD is an extremely busy center equipped with 19 bedded Coronary Care Unit, 19 bedded surgical ITC, departments of cardiac electrophysiology, Echocardiography, Exercise Tolerance Test, Nuclear Cardiology, three fully equipped catheterization labs capable of complex coronary and cardiac interventions, four cardiac surgical theatres capable of all kinds of adult and paediatric cardiac surgery, 1600 cardiac surgical procedures are done yearly, 80% of which is open heart surgery. About 32000 transthoracic and 600 transoesophageal Echoes, 1000 Exercise Tolerance Tests, 450 myocardial perfusion scans, 6000 diagnostics coronary angiographies and 500 cardiac catheterizations, 1000 coronary angioplasty and stenting, 350 temporary and 250 permanent pacemakers implantations, 250 diagnostics and therapeutic cardiac electrophysiology procedures are performed in this institute every year. Hospital has its own well-equipped pathology and radiology unit. Facilities of CT Scan and MRI Scan are also available in a nearby center.

  Following expansion work in AFIC building is in progress and  will be completed by   Dec 2007 :-
a.    2 x additional rooms for new Cath Lab Machines.
b.    Additional 20 x beds capacity with Cath Lab for Post Cath patients.
c.    New 16 bedded emergency department with allied facility.
d.    3 x ECG rooms.
e.    8 x examination rooms.
f.     Mini Lab.
g.    Waiting Area.
h.     X Ray department.
i .     8 x ETT Rooms
j .    9 x Echo Rooms
k .   29 x specialist clinics.
l .    Installation of Cardiac CT will be completed by Dec 07.
m .  Separate OT, Cath Lab and ITC for Paediatrics to be completed by year 2008.
